Hugh Waterfield is pictured right beside Bishop Gregor Duncan during the Bishop’s visit to All Saints in February 2014. With them, from left to right, are David Brown, Jane Hely, John Kerr, Eileen Condie, Eileen Maitland and the Rev Sydney Maitland.
It was with great sadness that we marked the death in September of Hugh Waterfield, in his 90th year. Despite his age, Hugh was one of our most active members and will be sorely missed.
Hugh was responsible for several innovations in and around the church, including the planting of a herb garden – not only for the congregation, but available to the local community.
He was an active member of the Vestry and our Lay Representative, spreading copies of our magazine to other churches in the North West Regional Council.
Shortly before the tragic accident which led to his death, he shared for publication in the church magazine a poem by Elizabeth Cheney recalling the words of Matthew 6: 26:
Said the Robin to the Sparrow,
“I should really like to know
Why these anxious human beings
Rush about and worry so!”
Said the Sparrow to the Robin,
“Friend, I think that it must be
That they have no heavenly Father
Such as cares for you and me!”
