Bishop Gregor Duncan was interviewed on ITV’s Good Morning Britain programme on the morning after the tragedy, Tuesday December 23.
Video of the interview can be seen on the ITV website.
The Bishop said: “I didn’t see the event itself but I happened to pop out of the office and on my way back I realised that something very serious had happened. And then, with my secretary, a little later I came out from the office and saw the horrible aftermath of this disaster.
“That it should happen in the run-up to Christmas, when people are enjoying themselves in George Square, where all the festivities are taking place, is peculiarly awful, really, and we were very shocked and upset.
“I spoke to one of the emergency services asking if I could help, and she said: “Just stand there, Father, and say your prayers … five souls …”
“I shall never forget that. In fact, I think it’s now six people who’ve lost their lives in this tragedy.
“So I’m sure people will be gathering all over the city today to say their prayers, to offer love and practical kindness and help to people.”
The Rt Revd Dr Gregor Duncan, Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway in the Scottish Episcopal Church, said following the George Square crash on Monday December 22:
“The whole Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway offers our prayers for and condolences to all so suddenly and terribly caught up in this latest tragedy to befall the city of Glasgow. We bless God for the response of our emergency services.
“The disaster occurred very near our Diocesan Centre and I saw with my own eyes the awful aftermath. I shall not forget what I saw.”
